I bought an original glass bowl fuel filter from Dirk via the Yahoo Groups Forum and the set about seeing how to fit it. I thought this would be an easy task as I assumed that all Dinos has a fuel filter and that is was positioned in the same place. I was wrong and it also transpires that, where fitted, there are two different types of filter in 2 different positions.
It seems as though there were 3 configurations:
- No fuel filter
- Fuel filter fitted to the fire wall, passenger side
- Fuel filter fitted to the inner wing drivers side.
This seems to be the case irrespective of whether the car is a Spider or Coupé. Here are some period photos of engie bays demonstrating this:
2 litre Spider WITHOUT a fuel filter:
2 litre Spider with fuel filter on fire wall:
2 litre Coupé with fuel filter on fire wall:
2.4 litre coupé with fuel filter on inner wing:
Here are some other photos of engine bays I found on the internet which show the two different positions and types:
A Coupé with fuel filter on inner wing:
A Coupé with fuel filter on inner wing:
A Spider with fuel filter on fire wall:
A Spider with fuel filter on inner wing. Note the "drip tray" underneath the filter:
You can see my filter in the following picture and comparing it to the above pictures it is the fire wall type:
However my car should have a fuel filter fitted to the inner wing as there is the right space there and also the two bolts which should hold the drip-tray. I either fit the "wrong" filter in the right place (as some people do) or get a correct filter if possible (anyone got one for sale?).
For reference here is a picture of my engine bay where the fuel filter and drip tray should go:
and here is a picture of the mounting bracket for a fire-wall mounted filter:
